For even a shot at ROI, you know that the BI capabilities you build must be aligned with the business objectives you uphold. So then why do so many BI initiatives fail on the promise of ROI?
Because you must align more than just business objectives with BI.
Linking your objectives to your BI solution is critical. But objectives change. Business events, consumer demands, and global economies move at astonishing speeds. Current objectives will shift in priority, and new ones will emerge. So before you construct a BI solution on objectives (which we discuss in Business Requirements Analysis), take one more step back, and look at your organization itself.
Are you aligned with BI?
Does your organization use BI not only as a solution to a problem, but as a long term way of doing business?
To answer that question, consider some other ones: How do you use information from day to day, and from week to week? What is your commitment to learning and discovery, and who leads those activities? Do you combine new information with historical data to create knowledge, and revamp the way you do things? Do you examine decisions--both good and bad--to understand their contexts and track their effects? Or do you keep operating by the same reports?
In short, do you value information?
Successful BI solutions begin with organizations that value information. BI cannot generate business results in an organization that doesn't allow information to drive and change activities.
